Mother’s Day Feature & interview (May 2023)

Happy Mother's Day to all of the Mom's out there!  Recently I was commissioned by Milk X Hong Kong to create a series of illustrations for their Mother's Day issue alongside several other talented international illustrators!  Milk X HK is a monthly magazine covering luxury fashion, beauty and lifestyle established in 2006. It is available at major convenience stores and Eslite Bookstores in Hong Kong.  I was honored to be interviewed and create illustrations about my own Mom for this unique feature!  To read the abbreviated online version check out the link below! For all of my english speaking friends, I added a translation of the interview below as well!

Milk X HK - Mother’s Day Interview with ning sang:

1. Present - Can you draw what present you would love to give your mother on Mother’s Day? Why?

A hand-made card.  My family members and husband love them!  I’ve been making my own cards for years, though I often don’t have enough time to gift as many these days.   I like to draw caricatures or use old photographs that I cut up and utilize in a new illustration.  It’s always nice to make Mom smile!

2. A childhood item - Can you draw a memorable item from your childhood memories with your mother? Why is this a special moment/memory?

I have wonderful memories of reading with my mom and two sisters before bed.  Our favorite picture book was Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.  Mom would always call us kids her “three owl babies.”

3. Flower - Can you draw the flower you would love to give her on Mother’s Day? Why do you pick this flower?

Tulips.  They’re always beautiful in the spring and my mother grows them alongside our childhood home.  Now that I’m a homeowner and know how difficult it is to grow anything I appreciate them more!  I’d normally say lilacs, but I’ve already gifted her a lilac tree!

4. A meal - Can you draw a meal you would love to have with her on Mother’s Day? Why would you arrange the meal in this way?

I switched to a vegan diet a few years ago, and lasagna was the first meal that I made that I felt genuinely proud of.  I love Chef AJ’s recipe from her book Unprocessed, accompanied by a large salad with lots of veggies.  My mom is a talented gardener so she loves vegetables.

5. Mother - Can you draw your mother? What message do you have for your mother?

My mother always hates her photograph taken, but maybe she will like an illustration of herself! She’s always looked beautiful to me so I never understood it.  I always wanted to be just like her as a child, and the older I get, the more I feel we have in common.  I love you Mom!
